Women of Busia Lead the Way in Green Revolution
Rooted in Strength: Women of Busia Lead the Way in Green Revolution

In Busia, a powerful change is taking root—literally. From the fertile soils of our community, a new green movement is growing, and at its forefront are the incredible women and girls of Busia.
This past season, Dhamira Moja was proud to support a grassroots initiative that saw over 500 trees planted across local schools, health centers, and family homesteads. But the true story isn’t just in the numbers; it’s in the leaders who made it happen. This was a campaign led by, for, and because of women.
Why Women are the Key to Re-greening Busia
The connection between women and the land is profound. In our communities, women are the primary caregivers and the managers of household resources. They are the ones who fetch water, grow food, and feel the immediate impact of a changing environment. When trees are lost to deforestation, it is women who walk further for firewood. When soil quality diminishes, it is women who struggle to feed their families.
It is this intimate knowledge that makes women the most powerful agents of environmental change. They are not just planting trees; they are planting security, sustainability, and a legacy for their children.
Our Scholars Leading the Charge
The Dhamira Moja tree planting campaign was an extension of our core mission: empowerment through education. Our scholars did not just participate; they led.
- Science in Action: Girls from our science clubs shared their knowledge about indigenous tree species, explaining which ones are most resilient and beneficial for the local ecosystem.
- Civic Leadership: They organized the planting schedules, coordinated with village elders for permissions, and educated their peers on the long-term importance of the project.
- A Living Lesson: For these young women, the campaign was a practical lesson in leadership, project management, and environmental stewardship. They are learning that their voice has the power to shape the physical world around them.
“When we plant a tree, we are not just digging a hole,” said Grace A., a Form 3 scholar sponsored by Dhamira Moja. “We are putting down roots for our own future. This tree will provide shade, clean air, and fruit. It shows everyone that when women lead, we grow.”
The Many Roots of Impact: Why This Campaign Matters
This women-led initiative creates a powerful ripple effect across our community:
- Environmental Resilience: The trees will combat soil erosion, improve air quality, and provide a sustainable source of food and, in the future, even income.
- Women’s Empowerment: Taking a public leadership role in a community project builds immense confidence and shifts perceptions about what women and girls can achieve.
- Educational Reinforcement: The campaign brought subjects like biology, agriculture, and civics to life, showing our scholars the direct application of their education.
- A Symbol of Hope: These growing trees are a daily, visible reminder of the strength and forward-thinking vision of Busia’s women.
Nurturing the Future, Together
The work does not stop with planting. The women and girls have committed to being the guardians of these saplings, ensuring they are watered and protected as they grow—just as Dhamira Moja nurtures their own growth.
This campaign is a testament to a simple truth: when you educate a girl and empower a woman, you don’t just change one life. You equip a natural leader who will cultivate a better future for everyone.
Support our mission to educate girls and empower women who lead, in every field—from the classroom to the community forest.
